“What is Kombucha?“
We’ve been getting that question a lot lately. We hear Kombucha is the “it” drink for athletes, and if you are a frequent visitor of health food stores, you’ve probably seen the fizzy stuff taking over the shelves.
So, what exactly is Kombucha?
First things first — it’s pronounced “com-BOO-chah”. Kombucha is a fizzy, fermented tea drink that’s relatively low in calories, caffeine, and sugar, but high in healthy benefits.
What is Kombucha made of?
Kombucha is made of green or black tea. We brew our tea with famous Pilsner laden water from the Czech Republic — known as “Healing Water”. We add minimally processed organic brown cane sugar and a jelly-like starter known as a SCOBY — a “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast” — which converts sugar into CO2.
So, what is Kombucha good for?
Because most of sugar is consumed during the fermentation process, the resulting tea is low in sugar and naturally carbonated — making Kombucha the perfect replacement for a sugary soda. It goes down great with grilled quinoa burgers in place of a beer, or as an alternative to your usual boring black tea.
Best of all, it’s almost ridiculously healthy. On top of delivering a slew of probiotics and prebiotics, it’s a good source of vitamin B, which can help regular metabolism and energy — why wouldn’t you drink it?
What does Kombucha taste like?
Human taste buds are hardwired to seek out “sweet”. That’s because sweet taste translates to calories and energy (great for hungry hunter-gatherers, not so good for modern office workers). Like beer or coffee, some say the tartness of Kombucha is an acquired taste — especially if your taste buds are used to super-sweet soda. The first sip can be a surprise, but many people find themselves hooked on the refreshing bubbles and lemonade-y pucker.
The flavors of Kombucha can vary quite a bit from one brew to another. Our blend is slightly sour, a tad sweet, and perfectly fizzy (if we do say so ourselves).
How can I try Kombucha?
Luckily, there are plenty of Kombucha brews out there to test and train your taste buds. Our most popular variety is the green tea and lemon, which has a light, sweet flavor.
